We had a wonderfully relaxing stay in Russan. A few gentle strolls through the hills and some quiet evenings sipping pastis under the trees before supper. La Forge was the perfect place to meet up with friends and had everything we needed for our guests. Fantastic fresh produce from Les Halles in Nîmes, the Market in Uzèz and road site stalls along the way meant we were jostling for time in the kitchen to try out our finds. On one of the evenings we did venture out we went to Le Tracteur at Sanilhac. Minimal menu but we couldn't fault a thing. Almost reluctant to share that one as it doesn't need to get any more popular.

We'll certainly be coming back as there was so much we didn't do. A big thank you to Jannette too.

If rock climbing in the Gard region is your thing this is the place to stay; great accomodation in a quiet village in close proximity to all the major cliffs. We had a brilliant climbing holidaywith mainly sun and blue skies, all this at Xmas! We`ll be back!

Russan is ideally placed for a canoe trip down the Gard river during the period when the river is in full flow (it disappears underground in the summer leaving the river bed bone dry)

A couple of companies based on the river bank at Collias organise these trips which start at Russan and can return to Collias a distance by river of about 24 km, or continue further down the river to Pont du Gard.

We went with le Tourbillon company; the staff are very helpful and speak good English. They met us in the square at Russan and took us to the riverside where they provided a very robust canoe which can sit up to 3 people, life jackets and a large water resistant container for spare clothing, camera, lunch etc. One advantage of this adventure is that you are travelling with the river current and paddling is really only necessary to assist the current flow and steer, particularly in the parts of the river which run faster and which provide real but safe excitement!

The trip took about 4 1/2 hours and we stopped half way for a picnic by the riverside. The first half of the journey is particularly stunning travelling alone through deep gorges with only the company of water birds and fish. It felt like a real adventure holiday. Le Tourbillon provided and map and instructions about any hazards to avoid. The only real one is the weir at Collias where you have to get out of the river and carry the canoe along the footpath for a hundred and fifty meters.

In all a memorable day. We cycled back to Russan afterwards, otherwise you will need to take your car first to Collias and come back to Russan in the le Tourbillon minibus.

Enjoy!

I stayed at La Forge in September 2007 with my husband, father-in-law and sister-in-law. The house was plenty big enough for four of us. The best thing about the village and the house is the location. It is quiet but nearby there are fantastic towns and cities, shops and restaurants. It was a great break and I will definitely be going back again.

La Forge is extremely pleasant and comfortable, light and airy upsatirs with a view of the square that takes you right to the heart of the very friendly local community. You can lie in bed and let the soothing sounds of the fountain lull you to sleep !

Russan is a great base for cycling – local countryside varies from gently rolling to moderately challenging – views are spectacular and the area is endlessly interesting. Lots of opportunities for off road cycling.

Several footpaths, including two long distance GR routes, pass right in front of the house and quickly take you away from the village into a beautiful area along the Gardon. Then there’s the village cafe for a reviving drink!
