Russan is one of the four villages of the commune of Ste Anastasie situated in the heart of the Gard department on the River Gardon, part of the Languedoc region of the south of France.
Russan is a beautiful, quiet village ideally situated within easy reach of Nîmes, Uzès, Avignon, Orange and the great Roman aqueduct of the Pont-du-Gard. The outskirts of Nîmes are 10 minutes from the village across the Garrigues, and the centre of the town a further 5 minutes.
La Forge is on the north east side of la place de la Fontaine. The front of the house gets glorious sunshine through the trees on the square from the afternoon until late in the evening. On the southern side of the square is the church and the bridge across the gorge, with views along the river, that leads to the road to Nîmes.
There are a few shops around the square, the Post Office, a Café and Bar which doubles as the newsagent (papers from London merely a day late) and also sells bread when the Boulangerie is closed.
Russan is an authentic working community where there are occasional celebrations held in the square or outside the church. The area is popular with visitors, both French and international. The balcony at La Forge offers a great vantage point from which to view village life.
At La Calmette there is a convenient shopping centre just a 5 minute drive from Russan. There is a large supermarket, petrol station, a mini-supermarket selling organic local produce, a chemist and banking facilities. You can find anything else you may need in Uzès just 15 minutes away where there are much larger supermarkets and the famous market in la Place aux Herbes.
Have you got something to share about the area? We’d be really pleased if you want to leave a comment on our guestbook.
